Deep Snow Mobility

DEEP SNOW MOBILITY TRAINING

Deep snow mobility is a critical skill set for SOF operating in a seasonal, winter snowpack. Tactical Mountain Training’s Deep Snow Mobility courses are designed to prepare your team for travel through a variety of deep snow environments using modern, alpine ski touring equipment.

Our Deep Snow Mobility courses can be customized to meet your mission-specific parameters, and often include elements of avalanche hazard mitigation, white-out-navigation, survival skills, emergency response, and ski mountaineering.

The North Cascades offer glaciated, non-glaciated, and high-angle travel, as well as world-record snowfall and challenging, extreme cold weather conditions. The combination of our curriculum and terrain ensures that your team is prepared for any deep snow environment they encounter in the execution of their duties.

Deep Snow Mobility Courses can be customized to include any of the following curricula. Please contact Tactical Mountain Training for a curated itinerary based on your team’s needs.

Avalanche Hazard Mitigation

Avalanche hazard evaluation and mitigation is necessary for deep snow mobility in mountain environments. Tactical Mountain Training’s AIARE Level 1, Level 2, and Avalanche Rescue curriculum provide a foundational understanding of the avalanche phenomenon as well as rescue and decision-making techniques for travel in avalanche terrain. Avalanche hazard mitigation can be standalone training or woven into the fabric of a larger Deep Snow Mobility program.

Alpine Ski Touring

Alpine Touring (AT) skis are the preferred tool for travel in deep snow conditions. Tactical Mountain Training can prepare your unit for efficient travel on skis regardless of team members’ downhill ski ability. Our alpine touring curriculum includes equipment familiarity, tour planning, movement techniques for skinning and skiing, track setting, route finding, and navigation.

Ski Mountaineering

Ski Mountaineering is the combination of skiing and mountaineering techniques, with an emphasis on technical ropework. Ropework skills are necessary for mitigating hazards in both glaciated and high-angle terrain. Tactical Mountain Training’s ski mountaineering curriculum includes steep snow climbing, ski rappels, ski lowers, roped glacier travel, and crevasse rescue.

Survival & Rescue

The mountain environment is unpredictable. Prepare your team with the necessary skills to not only survive the unexpected, but to also continue the mission. Tactical Mountain Training’s survival and rescue curriculum includes emergency shelter construction, extreme cold weather survival strategies, improvised recue sleds, and team member evacuation.

FMP Exercises

Tactical Mountain Training’s programs are designed to prepare your team for mission success, not recreational pursuits. Our FMP Exercises integrate our deep snow mobility curriculum with real world applications, crafted as closely to your mission-specific parameters as possible. FMP exercises are typically included at the end of a deep snow mobility course, and are also offered as multi-day, standalone training programs.
